Nuestra Historia
I am María Alejandra, a Colombian Spanish teacher and cultural guide deeply rooted in the vibrant spirit of Medellín. My journey led me from Social Communication to the heart of language education, where I discovered that true learning happens through connection. I created Español al Zoco to bridge the gap between textbook grammar and the rich, authentic pulse of our streets, helping you not just study Spanish, but live it with confidence.
Guided by a passion for journalism and a love for my roots, I offer a perspective that goes beyond words.
Hi, I’m María Alejandra.
When I was little, I dreamed of becoming either a pediatrician or a singer. Unfortunately, I sing beautifully… very badly.
And blood makes me as dizzy as cars and boats. So life had other plans for me.
I was born and raised in Colombia, surrounded by loud family gatherings, mountain traditions, endless stories, and the kind of warmth that makes people feel at home within minutes.
Nuestra esencia
I come from a huge Colombian family — 6 aunts and uncles on my dad’s side and 15 on my mom’s side — so conversation, laughter, teasing, food, and human connection have always been part of who I am.
I have two sisters and two brothers, and somewhere between all the chaos, noise, love, and storytelling, I discovered something important:
I genuinely love people.
That passion led me to study Social Communication & Journalism at Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana in Colombia.
Later, I completed a double degree in Communications and Psychology at Santa Barbara City College, where I graduated with honors.
And somehow, I ended up combining the best parts of every field to teach Spanish in a way that feels human, real, emotional, and fun.
Because language is not just vocabulary:
It’s personality.
It’s humor.
It’s culture.
It’s confidence.
It’s belonging.
I’m passionate about Colombian slang and the expressions that preserve the warmth, humor, and soul of our culture.
Outside of teaching, I love adventures, games, CrossFit, chocolate, and making people laugh.
Every morning starts with traditional Colombian hot chocolate — a small ritual that keeps me connected to my grandmother Ema and my mountain roots.
And of course, there’s Lulú: my 11-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, professional napper, occasional class guest, and beloved teaching assistant.
